WHAT IS IGNC? IGNC-CIBV (International Neighbor Council- Consejo
Internacional de Buena Vecindad)is a non-profit organization founded
in 1954 by prominent Mexican and American businessmen. Its head
office is located in Monterrey, México. The objective of the
association is to promote the principle of "good neighbors" and
friendship between countries of the world. There are currently 26
active Chapters:14 in United States(12 of which are in Texas), and
12 in México.
The Chapters cooperate in activities that
increase social, cultural, youth, and edecational exchanges, and
support the principles of democracy based on constitutional
authority. Many friendships of ten, twenty, and more years standing
have developed across the Rio Bravo/Rio Grande border between
members of IGNC.
IGNC-CIBV sponsors two Conventions. The
Spring Convention is held in late April in México; the Fall
Convention is held in the United States in October. At the
Conventions, members from both countries attend Permanent Committee
meetings, tou points of interest, enjoy regional food and
entertainment, and attend a formal dance.
Since 1954,
IGNC-CIBV has addressed issues such as simplification of border
crossing procedures, the construction and operation of child and
maternal health centers in the Rio Grande Valley, the teaching of
English in Mexican schools and Spanish in U.S. schools, and tourism.
The non-profit Foundation of IGNC- CIBV assists students to pursue
college educations and provides assistance in cases of natural
disaster.
Individual chapters have sponsored projects such as
the donation of an ambulance to a Sister-City in México, and
significant financial contributions to the Tarahumara Indian health
clinic in Chihuahua. IGNC of Austin sponsors "Casa de Nazareth" an
orphanage located in Piedras Negras, in collaboration with the
Piedras Negras/Eagle Pass Chapter.
Anyone who wants to learn
about and have contact with nations of the Americas will want to
join IGNC. In particular, IGNC will help members in the United
States and in México appreciate and understand each other. These two
countries, which share a 2,000 mile border, have very different
cultures. |
